Paint out at Bee Caves, Austin, Texas

October 22, 2004 - The Austin Pastel Society had a paint out at the intersection of Hwy 620 and Hwy 71 in Bee Caves. Some old barns, windmill and home are being raised to put in a Galeria. Six of us met there to record a little history and enjoy a day of painting in the great outdoors. It was cloudy until afternoon so our light and shadows were very even with no great highlights. Each artist worked on a different view and gathered together for lunch. Below are some snapshots for the day, including Jo's "almost finished painting".

Click on the photos for a larger image and "back" on your browser to return here. Enjoy.

Libby Peters working on an oil of the windmill and tank. She is a portrait painter and doing plein air is an interesting break for her. The painting is below her photo, not quite finished.

Martha Allan working with her pastels on a painting of one of the barns.

Carol Mattox creating a painting of the large barn in oils. Carol works in oils and pastels. She organized the paint out day.

June, Carol's friend, joined in to try capturing the old buildings in watercolor.

Regina Burchett enjoying the out door setting and working with her pastels. The very beginning of her barn is shown at the left. Regina is a member of the Austin Pastel Society and the Bastrop Fine Arts Guild with Jo. You can see more of her work on her page.

Jo's almost finished pastel painting of a couple of the barns and the garden. Check back soon to see the finished work.

Paint out at Fisherman's Cove, NS, Canada

As mentioned, our Canadian summers have become a wonderful tradition. Gene rides his mountain bike, mostly on abandoned railroad tracks that have been converted to trails. I drop him off and pick him up after several hours at the other end of the trail. I get to do plein air painting while waiting. We also golf almost daily. Canadian people have been truly open and generous; giving aid, directions, information. We have shared food, their time and experiences. July and August of 2003 found us (husband, Gene, and I) in Nova Scotia.

After internet correspondence with Richard Rudnicki, we met him at "Paint the Town" in Annapolis Royal, NS. Richard invited Jo to join his plein air group for a day of painting at Fisherman's Reserve near Dartmouth. Denise Soper and Bill Hanrahan rounded out the group. We met at 7:00 a.m., August 19, and had a most enjoyable day painting and then a short visit to finish up our session. Fisherman's Reserve is a most beautiful fishing village. The water was so still and calm in the morning, just glorious.

Here are a few snapshots and memories of the day. See Jo's finished painting, acrylic on the Gallery page.Click on a photo for a larger image and "back" on your browser to return here.

Richard and Jo at the end of the day. Jo was having much more fun than the troubled look on her face shows. :) She must have been sorry to see the day end. You can see Richard's work on his home page. Enjoy.

Paint the Town

Annapolis Royal, NS, Canada

August 16 - 17, 2003

As mentioned above, Jo took part in "Paint the Town" in Annapolis Royal. It is a great weekend and everyone should do it. Artists enjoy and the visitors did as well. There were about 100 artists turned loose to paint plein air around the town. Artists were encouraged to do as many as four paintings each day. Jo completed 5 paintings in pastel, it was sprinkling Sunday afternoon, so she couldn't finish the sixth. The visitors could purchase the paintings at full price during the day and then there was an auction in the evenings for "bargain" paintings. A large variety of work from abstract to metal works. Local artists to some from Texas! There were a great number of people there, accommodations were a premium. This year it will be held on . Regretfully Jo won't be able to attend. She and Gene will be in British Columbia this year, 2004. Here are a few memories of the day. Enjoy.
